Mod Podge: the all-in-one decoupage glue, sealer and finish we have been mixing since 1967

We are the people who make Mod Podge. One bottle glues the paper down, seals it in and leaves the finish you asked for, which is why a single jar has been enough for most craft projects for over fifty years. Everything we currently bottle is on these shelves.

Why one bottle does three jobs

Decoupage used to mean a pot of glue, a tin of varnish and a long wait between them. We put the two together on a water base and gave it a name that is simply modern decoupage run into one word. The bottle you open today is still that idea: brush it under the paper to stick it down, brush it over the top to seal it, and the sheen you chose is already in the formula.

What changed over the years is how many places that idea had to work. A mug that goes in the dishwasher needs a different cure to a planter that sits in the rain, and a jigsaw you want to hang on a wall needs something that will not warp the card. So we kept splitting the formula — dishwasher safe, outdoor, puzzle saver, fabric, hard coat — while keeping the handling the same. If you can use one of ours, you can use all of them.

Glue it. Seal it. Mod Podge it.

The bottle we hand people first when they tell us what they are making.

What we build into every formula

A water base, on purpose

Every brush-on formula we make is water based. Brushes rinse under the tap, spills come up with a damp cloth, and nothing in the room needs a window open.

Clear when it is dry

The medium goes on milky so you can see where you have been, then clears as it cures. What you see at the end is the paper, not our coat over it.

The sheen is already in the jar

Matte, satin, gloss, sparkle, super thick — you pick the finish when you pick the bottle. There is no separate varnish step unless you want one.

How to use it, in three steps

1

Brush a thin coat under the paper

Work on a clean, dry surface. Thin is the whole trick — a heavy coat is what makes paper wrinkle, not the medium itself.

2

Smooth from the middle outwards

Press the paper down from the centre to the edges with a finger or a smoothing tool so the air has somewhere to go. Let it dry before you go over the top.

3

Seal with one or two coats on top

Brush over the whole piece, let it dry, add a second coat if you want more protection. Most formulas want 15 to 20 minutes between coats.

I love using Mod Podge Super Matte for my crafting projects! It goes on smoothly, dries clear with a beautiful non-shiny finish, and gives my projects a clean, professional look. It’s easy to work with and a great staple to have in my craft supplies.

This is so awesome! I love the large flakes of gold glitter. Creates a very pretty design when used over Christmas decoupaged napkin. I highly recommend it

I used this for a project to make an art print look painted ( saw it on instagram) and it totally worked! The pic is while it was wet and it dried totally clear but left a look of brush strokes.

Easy to use. Was a little worried when I started painting it on that it would look awful after drying. But it dried clear and looks great. I’ve included a pic of before the top coat, during the top coat application, and after 30 mins of drying.

Wow! I never knew this existed! Not only do I house it for fabric, to use in my junk journaling, but also for paper. Who knew? Dries well and so easy to apply. Once dried it is not sticky. Makes my papers and fabrics pieces durable. I definitely did not waste my money for this, well worth it.

This is magic in a bottle. So much fun and ads just the right amount of zing. It does have a strong odor. I run a fan while using.

Choosing a Mod Podge formula

Mod Podge is a water-based decoupage medium that works as glue, sealer and finish in one coat. It bonds paper, fabric and thin trim to porous surfaces — wood, canvas, terra cotta, paper mache, plaster, card — and dries to a clear film that protects what is underneath. Because it is acrylic and water based, it is non-toxic, it cleans up with water, and it will not fill a room with solvent.

Matte, gloss and satin

The original three are the same glue with a different sheen. Matte dries flat and is the easiest to photograph; gloss gives a wet shine that deepens printed colour; satin sits between the two. All three go on milky and dry clear, and all three can be used under or over the paper. If you only ever buy one bottle, buy matte or gloss in 8 oz and learn what it does.

When the ordinary formula is not enough

Surfaces that get washed, soaked or left outside need a formula built for it. Dishwasher safe cures hard enough for the top rack of a machine. Outdoor and water resistant formulas shrug off rain on planters, signs and garden markers. Hard Coat is the one for furniture and anything that gets handled daily. Puzzle Saver is mixed to soak between jigsaw pieces and lock them without buckling the card.

Fabric keeps the cured film soft so cloth still drapes, and Stiffy does the opposite — it sets fabric rigid for bows, baskets and ornaments. Photo Transfer and the image transfer sheets lift a printed image off its paper so it can be laid into the surface itself rather than stuck on top of it.

Sparkle, depth and special effects

Sparkle, Extreme Glitter and the iridescent and pearl formulas carry the glitter in suspension so it lands evenly instead of pooling. Dimensional Magic pours a clear, domed bead that reads as glass over a pendant or a bottle cap. Antique Matte and the crackle and vintage finishes age a surface deliberately. Glow-in-the-dark takes a charge from a lamp and gives it back in a dark room.

Spray or brush

A brush gives control and a slightly thicker build; an aerosol gives an even coat with no brush marks and reaches into carving, lace and texture a brush would bridge over. We make clear acrylic sealers in matte, satin, gloss and super gloss in cans for exactly that. Spray outdoors or with the window open, build the coat in thin passes, and let each pass flash off before the next.

Dry time, cure time and care

Most of our brush-on formulas are touch dry in 15 to 20 minutes and take a full coat in about an hour. Curing is a slower thing: the film keeps hardening for roughly three to four weeks, and that is why dishwasher safe pieces should be left alone for 28 days before their first wash. No formula of ours is fully waterproof — outdoor and dishwasher safe are highly water resistant, which is a different promise and an honest one. Keep bottles capped, upright and away from frost and they will outlast most projects on the shelf.

What people ask us most

What is Mod Podge?

It is our water-based decoupage medium: glue, sealer and finish in one bottle. You brush it under paper or fabric to stick it to a surface, then brush it over the top to seal the piece. It goes on milky and dries clear.

Is Mod Podge waterproof when it dries?

No, and we will not say otherwise. Our outdoor and dishwasher safe formulas are highly water resistant once cured, which covers planters, signs and mugs on the top rack. If a piece will actually sit in water, finish it with a clear acrylic sealer or a resin.

How long does it take to dry and cure?

Touch dry in 15 to 20 minutes for most brush-on formulas, with a second coat after about an hour. Full cure takes three to four weeks — wait 28 days before putting a dishwasher safe piece through a wash cycle.

Which formula should I use for my project?

Match the formula to where the piece will live. Matte or gloss for shelf pieces, dishwasher safe for anything washed, outdoor for anything rained on, Hard Coat for furniture, Puzzle Saver for jigsaws, Fabric for cloth that still needs to drape.

Can I use it over acrylic paint?

Yes. Let the paint dry fully first, then brush the medium over it in thin coats. It will not lift properly dry acrylic, and it will not go yellow over pale colours.

Is it safe to use with children?

Our brush-on formulas are non-toxic and water based, which is why they turn up in classrooms. The aerosol sealers are a different matter — those are for ventilated spaces and adult hands.

How long does a bottle keep?

Capped, upright and kept from freezing, an unopened bottle is good for years and an opened one for a long season of projects. If it has gone stringy or smells sour, it is done — start a fresh jar rather than fight it.

Is Mod Podge just white school glue?

No. It shares a water base with it, but ours is formulated to dry clear, to seal as well as stick, and to hold up to handling. School glue stays soluble and goes cloudy; ours does not.
